Spied: BMW Z9 (SpyShots)

It seems that nobody is exactly sure what this is – well, apart from BMW, presumably, but it’s not telling.
Obviously a heavily disguised two-seater drop-top sportscar, the confusion is over whether it’s the current Z4’s replacement or a new car likely to be branded Z9.

Previous reports have it pegged as the former, but now there’s a growing consensus it might actually be the mysterious Z9 – a forthcoming flagship for BMW’s range that’s set to take on the Mercedes-Benz SL. Such a car would also act as a successor to the retro-fabulous Z8 roadster, which ceased production in 2003. The confusion stems from this prototype’s size. While clearly bigger than the existing Z4, it’s expected the next generation version of this car will get enlarged dimensions anyway as BMW makes room for an entry-level Z2 lower down the range.
